When to Find an Accountability Partner

The short answer is NOW, but let’s see why it matters.

Do you struggle with following through?

To follow through with our goals, we need to be held accountable.

The problem is, we’re not good at holding ourselves accountable for the progress we make.

So how do you overcome this challenge?

Ask for help and you shall receive.

I got to experience the massive effect of having an accountability partner since the start of the year.

When I joined the 90 Day Year program by Todd Herman, I was matched with an awesome accountability partner named Jillian.

We were both at the start-up stage and also in the same timezone.

Those are 2 important factors to keep in mind. You want to have someone in your life who can empathize with your situation and also be reachable when you need them.

During the first 3 months of the year, we met once a week online. We told each other what we were going to do for the following week.

We also reported on our achievements during the previous week.

It sounds simple but the truth is simple things work when you maintain consistency.

This partnership pushed both of us to get things done even when we were about to give up.

Why? Because you can fool yourself but you can’t fool others.

When there’s someone else who is aware of your goals, you are no longer alone in the process.

Having an accountability partner motivates you to deliver on what you promised.

Now how do you find an accountability partner that you can count on?

For any good partnership to work, it needs to be mutually beneficial.

Look within your existing circle. I bet there are people who would love to help. And chances are that they are also struggling with following through.

Are you shy to ask someone to start this whole accountability partnership?

Then just tell them what you’re aiming to get done. Even announcing it to someone else can have a huge impact on your progress.

I suggest you start working on your stuff for a bit before you reach out. This way you can show some progress and prove that you’re serious about your work.

Who knows, if you do this right, maybe it’ll inspire them to also choose you as their accountability partner.

And that’s where the magic happens.

You’ll end up creating an amazing relationship. You will support each other by sharing progress and providing feedback.

Jillian and I got to meet in person in Las Vegas where we wrapped up the 90 Day Year program. And guess what?

We both asked each other if we could continue after the 90 Day Year program.

She’s been a great source of support for me beyond anything I could have expected and I’m super grateful to have met her.

Now that I’ve learned about the power of being accountable to someone else, I’m applying it in other areas with other people.

So what are you waiting for?

I hope this has inspired you to find your own accountability partner and start following through with your goals.

Also, remember to assign dates to your goals or else they just remain as wishes.

I wrote this piece as part of a 90-day challenge I took on to get better at this type of writing. To learn more about me you can visit my website here.
