I totally agree with you. Even more, a multihobbist is, IMHO, a sign of a balanced and organized (time efficient) person. A trait that should be taken into account.
Nevertheless, pet projects are in fact very important, for they allow to give you purpose when you’re learning new skills, even if it’s not related to your field. I understand the point of your article is not to undervalue pet projects, but to point out this misconception of “I love <some_field>, therefore I do nothing but <some_field>”.
