5 Consequences of the AMOC running Amok

Global Thermohaline Circulation.

AMOC stands for Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and it is a significant component of the Earth’s ocean circulation system, also known as the “Great Ocean Conveyor Belt.” This system is massive. Just imagine, the gulf stream that spans the Atlantic Ocean is but a small part of this complex system. Briefly the AMOC transports warm, salty water from the tropical Atlantic Ocean towards the northern latitudes and then returns cooler water southward in the deep ocean.

The AMOC plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate and weather patterns. It helps distribute heat around the globe, affecting regional climate conditions in Europe, North America, and beyond. Changes in the strength or stability of the AMOC can have far-reaching impacts on global climate, including shifts in weather patterns, sea-level rise, and changes in marine ecosystems. The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation itself is a component of the global thermohaline circulation which is a global system of ocean current circulation.

Scientists closely monitor the AMOC to better understand its behavior and potential responses to climate change. There have been concerns that ongoing global warming and the influx of freshwater from melting ice could disrupt or weaken the AMOC, leading to significant climate consequences. A recent study published in the peer reviewed journal ‘Nature’ increased these fears. This study estimates that a collapse of the AMOC is likely around mid-century.

If the AMOC were to collapse we might expect the following consequences:

  • Temperature changes across Europe: A drop in average temperatures in the North Atlantic parts of Europe, particularly the British Isles, France and Scandinavia of 5–10°C. ever wonder why Anchorage is on average 5 °C colder than Oslo which is only slightly further south? It is because of the warming effect of the North Atlantic current.
  • Sea Level Rise Variability: A weakened AMOC could affect regional sea level rise patterns. Some studies suggest that a slowdown in the AMOC might lead to a more pronounced rise in sea levels along the northeastern coast of the United States due to the redistribution of ocean water masses. During the winter of 2009–2010, a significant weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation has been linked to a noteworthy 13 cm increase in sea level along the New York coastline, causing considerable damage.
  • Extreme weather events: If the AMOC weakens, it could potentially influence the occurrence and severity of extreme climate events, including heatwaves, droughts, and cold spells. Changes in atmospheric circulation patterns linked to a sluggish AMOC may create conditions that favor the persistence of specific weather extremes. Certain models propose that a slowdown in the AMOC could also enhance the intensity of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation. El Niño events are associated with elevated global temperatures and have been known to contribute to record-breaking high temperatures, as observed in 2023.
  • Changes in Marine Ecosystems: The AMOC influences the distribution of nutrients and organisms in the ocean. If the circulation weakens or collapses, it could disrupt marine ecosystems by altering the availability of nutrients, affecting the migration patterns of marine species, and impacting the food web dynamics and marine biodiversity which in turn further impacts the global climate.
  • Effects on Other Global Climactic Feed backs: The planet’s different cycles are interconnected and all components of one complicated system that we do not fully understand. A sudden collapse of the AMOC would impact other components of the climate, which would trigger various feedback mechanisms. For example, changes in ocean circulation could influence the exchange of heat and carbon dioxide between the ocean and the atmosphere, potentially affecting global temperatures and the carbon cycle.

While a future collapse of the AMOC is not yet certain, emerging scientific evidence suggests that such an event is becoming increasingly plausible. Addressing climate change at this stage may seem akin to shutting the stable door after the horse has already bolted. Nevertheless, it remains imperative to take decisive actions to mitigate and limit the extent and pace of climate change for the sake of preserving nature and safeguarding our way of life.

Earth’s climate system is highly complex and interconnected. The drivers of climate change, such as greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, have already set numerous environmental changes in motion. Even if we succeed in maintaining the AMOC, the consequences of climate change will continue to unfold, impacting ecosystems, biodiversity, and human societies.

Nonetheless, taking proactive measures to limit further climate change and its associated risks is undoubtedly in our best interest. By reducing carbon emissions, transitioning to renewable energy sources, preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, and implementing sustainable practices, we can mitigate the severity of future climate impacts. These efforts not only offer potential benefits for future generations but also directly impact the well-being and resilience of current communities worldwide.
