How Artificial Intelligence Can Extinct Humans
Could AI destroy mankind and rule the world?
“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last." - Stephen Hawking
Have you seen '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'The Terminator', 'The Matrix', 'Ex-Machina'?
All of them were based on the notion that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will evolve to a point at which we will not be able to control our own creations.
From Siri and Cortana, to self-driving cars, Artificial Intelligence is usually defined as the science of making computers do things that require intelligence when done by humans.
Artificial intelligence can be know as "weak AI", designed to perform a narrow task like facial recognition, internet searches or driving a car.
But the real goal is to create "strong AI".
While weak AI may outperform humans at whatever its specific task is, like playing chess or solving equations, strong AI would outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.
That's the problem!
If AI surpasses humanity and becomes "superintelligent", it could become powerful, difficult to control and take an unprepared human race by surprise.
“The problem isn’t consciousness, but competence. You make machines that are incredibly competent at achieving objectives and they will cause accidents in trying to achieve those objectives.” - Stuart Russel, Computer Science Professor
The time where computers will be able to program themselves is the time where humanity loses its function.
Computers and robots could solve their own problems so we wouldn’t be needed anymore. And we would be a target to them, an obstacle in their fight to conquer the world.
