A poem from my Ebook The Pottery Fish

METAMORPHOSIS

Infant…

Manipulative minor;

Appealingly helpless, incessantly demanding,

An inordinately selfish yet

Unintentional dictator…

Innocence personified.

Toddler…

Embryo entity;

Teething and tantrums, developing guile,

Mastering mobility and speech;

Tirelessly active, incredibly curious…

Repetitive enquirer

Juvenile…

Independent individual;

Heedlessly careless and disobedient;

Aggression masks uncertainty: life’s a game,

Parents an irritant; teachers a bore…

Precocious teenager.

Adolescent…

Pupating persona;

Bewildered, experimental, frustrated;

Self-willed, insecure and temperamental;

Has all the answers from a wealth of inexperience…

Omniscient egotist.

Adult…

Fallible finite;

Certainties evaporate, responsibilities weigh in,

Geriatric infirmities beckon; childhood fades

To memory and sweet nostalgia…

Transition complete.
