Avoid changing careers rapidly
When you already like something doing, you should explore whether it has good growth and positive career opportunities ahead or not. Many times people who are doing something great changes their domain just for sake of short term reward. I have a friend who worked in a reputed analytic firm in India and then moved to US for an MS in computer science and analytics. Till here it sounds perfect. Now he joined a reputed company with a decent salary in a domain which was irrelevant to his expertise on masters and relevant work he did before. He was miserable after a year as the current domain did not provide a lot of opportunities as far as career growth is concerned while from outside it looked glossy. At the end he made an exit and started again based on his past experience. The check-list he missed which landed him in such a situation was:
- Do you try looking at the career growth opportunities outside in the market?
- How is the market for offered position outside?
- How the work will evolve through time? Do you see it diverging or converging to a new domain with more or less opportunities for you in the future?
- Did you think from the hiring manager’s point of view? What is the purpose behind recruitment? Is there a real requirement(in which case the experienced candidate will have edge over inexperienced ones) or it is just filling up the rack?
The motive is to think through when you change your domain. Think about the pros and cons , make a list and consult with the experienced people regarding job market and growth to help yourself compare.
