The Nerd/Geek Life Ain’t Easy
Sometimes, I feel we’re just misunderstood.
Last night, about 15 people gathered together at my parents’ house for Easter dinner. Throughout the evening, I get random questions about technical issues any one of them is having. I, and one of my brothers, are often the IT support for the family. Neither of us have a problem with that though. That’s not the issue at hand.
As I’ve mentioned in others posts, I’ve become hooked on Telegram and deemed it my messaging app of choice. I’ve managed to convince quite a few friends to make the switch and they’re all enjoying it. As for the family, it was just one of my brothers (previously mentioned) and my parents. When I tried to bring this up to my other family members, such as my other brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews… I received a lot of teasing and eye rolling.
“Oh, not another app, Rob.”
“Why do I want Telegram? What’s wrong with SMS?”
“I have WhatsApp? Why would I switch?”
“I see no need for this.”
I, as usual, try to simply state, “It’s a good app. It’s useful. It’s better. Let me explain why.”
Then I’m either denied, or as I explain, I am teased, mocked, or simply see their eyes glaze over.
People get comfortable. It is one thing when Joe Shmoe does it. I care less about the random person. But when close friends or family do it, I can’t help but feel incredibly irked. I want them to move forward. Stay current. Enjoy something new and not stale dated. Keep up and learn a little, instead of being static and having to learn a lot later.
Unfortunately, they look back at me and say, “Rob, you just have a passion for technology. We don’t.” Then they go back to their phone in hand and browse Facebook.
Us nerds and geeks — we’re a minority. There’s a stigma that when we speak, it’s just a foreign language. Nothing of immediate importance. Just mumble jumble.
Then we watch them buy a year old device or something else of the like and tell us how wonderful it is.
