The first leg of trials for the Nacra 17 spot on the US Olympic Team are over and one of our two local competitors, Bora Gulari of Detroit, was the top US finisher, 12th overall.

Port Huron’s Katie Pettibone was fourth among the US teams, finishing 28th overall.

What counts right now is their finish among the US teams rather than their overall finishes, as they both continue to vie for that one Olympic spot. The final decision will come after the next tryout regatta, the Nacra World Championship, with racing beginning Feb. 9 in Clearwater, Florida.

Here’s what Gulari posted after Miami:

Bora and Louisa accomplished the goal of being the top American team in the final standings!! They were 12th overall for the regatta with some very strong performances now under their belt. The next American team, Mark and Carolina Mendelblatt, finished 20th overall. The remaining American teams finished 27th, 28th, 29th, 43rd, 44th, and 45th. Bora and Louisa were among the top ten finishers in 7 of the 15 races held with their highest finish being a 2nd. There were some disappointing races as well but opportunities to learn moving on to the next competition. Be sure to read the final US Sailing team report from the 2016 Sailing World Cup Miami!

Here’s what Pettibone posted:

The Miami World Cup 2016 has finished. It is the first event for many in the Olympic Trials, including us in the Nacra 17. Miami continued with unusual weather for the week and was generally lighter. For Team Easton/Pettibone it was a tough week- we started off with two bad days and improved our performance through the week but the damage was done. Incredibly disappointing week after all the hard work we have put in. Struggled for consistency. We have worked very hard and will continue to do so as we move over to Clearwater- the second event of the Olympic trials-and battle to represent the U.S.A. @ RIO. It is still anyone’s game with good performances. Thank you for your all your support and well wishes.
