Starting Keto

192 to 222 grams of fat, 116 grams of protein, and 25 grams of net carbs.

I keep hearing about this state you put your body into where you use fat instead of sugar as the main source of energy for your body. Practically all the carbs are used up so your body switches to “ketones”, an energy-containing cell produced by the liver from processing fatty acids.

Benefits range from a consistent supply of energy with no spikes or crashes, lower anxiety and stress levels, lower body fat percentage, no sweet cravings, and a bunch of other stuff (even starving cancer cells!). I don’t buy into all of it right away, but it’s hard to miss the obvious changes on my rock climbing friends as they go into nutritional ketosis.

Long story short and after listening to podcasts and reading books (links at the end) I decided to try it by myself. I went to Costco yesterday and felt like shit packing my cart with all the stuff I avoided over my whole adult life. My shopping list looked a bit like this:

  • Grass fed Kerrygold Irish butter
  • A TON of bacon (not the low fat kind), sardines, salmon, beef, eggs
  • Half a gallon of heavy whipping cream
  • Avocado oil, a bucket of coconut oil, avocado mayo
  • A bunch of green veggies, no fruit
  • Electrolytes supplements

So yeah, I’m not sure how it’ll go but I’m about to start my day with a “bulletproof coffee” (which is coffee with butter, heavy whipping cream, and coconut oil) for breakfast and we’ll see.

Oh, I’ve also read that I’ll feel like shit while my body transitions, I’m not looking forward to that…
