1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is consecutively ranked the top university in the US. It is often cited as one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Located in Cambridge, the Massachusetts Institute is known for its physical sciences and engineering but is also popular for other fields such as social sciences, arts, and humanity. The institute is highly selective, as only 8% of undergraduate applicants receive admission every year. 85 Nobel laureates, 52 National Medal of Science recipients, 65 Marshall Scholars, 45 Rhodes Scholars, 38 MacArthur Fellows, 34 astronauts, 19 Turing Award winners, 16 Chief Scientists of the U.S. Air Force, and 6 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with MIT.

2. Stanford University

Climbing up and taking the second spot, Stanford University ranks second in the world. Located in Silicon Valley, Stanford University is known for its business courses. The alumni of the institute include many successful entrepreneurs such as the founders and co-founders of Netflix, Google, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Stanford University has three academic schools that have both undergraduate and graduate students and another four professional schools. The university’s endowment, managed by the Stanford Management Company, was valued at $22.2 billion in August 2015.

3. Harvard University

Founded in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest university in the United States. It takes the third spot with its high ranked fields such as life sciences and medicine. Harvard is known for a broad range of fields including law, business, and medicine. The university is organized into eleven separate academic units and ten faculties. The alumni of Harvard University include eight U.S. presidents, several foreign heads of state, 62 living billionaires, 359 Rhodes Scholars, and 242 Marshall Scholars. Harvard also owns and operates the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, in Washington, D.C.

4. California Institute of Technology (CALTECH)

California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech is located in California, US. The smallest university among the top 4, Caltech has 2240 students only. Caltech is often cited as one of the world’s best universities. According to a 2015 Pomona College study, Caltech ranked number one in the U.S. for the percentage of its graduates who go on to earn a Ph.D.
