DEMOGRAPHY IS DESTINY

Why you’ll probably need to move to succeed.

Leaving France for the USA was a hard choice. Following a macro analysis helped me to reduce risks and add perspective. I expected Capital risk to shrink as a direct effect of the financial crisis, and crowd funding to develop along with Micro Venture Capital (e.g. 500 startups). None of this would have happend in France, but it was going to happen in America where the crisis hit first. So I went where no one wanted to go back then : San Francisco.

There was a need to help and industrialize on a large scale startup learning at the earliest stage possible, Startup Weekend has now grown into the world leader of entrepreneurial learning experience, and this would have been perfectly impossible to achieve from France.

There is an advantage to think about where you should start your business. it will undoubtedly shape your destiny. Let’s look at demography for example.

In 2010, at TedX Miami I shared what most will argue is probably the most fundamental shift in mankind history: The evolution of the World population for the past 10,000 years.

World population in Billions since 10,000 BC

Did you know that more people were born between 1980 and today than all mankind before? This is arguably exciting news at a marco economic level.

Another perspective is shared by Dominic Barton, Global Managing Director, McKinsey & Company

Dominic Barton, Five Trends Reshaping our Global Economy

Countries like India China Nigeria or Indonesia will be booming in the next 20 years. In China and India alone, more than 2 billion people will have access to the middle class. In scale it is 100 times larger than the last industrial revolution, in speed it will be 10 times faster! Are you, or do you have contact in these countries? If not you might want to think about it.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

1 . Understanding trends and historical momentum will allow you to reduce risks by identifying where to be.

2. Asia will be booming for the next 20 years

3. Demography are solid and predictable trends, always observe it to understand the future of an economy
