Wednesday — Week Eight

Well, another day off sick and feeling terrible. I just want to feel good again.

While still feeling pretty terrible, I felt significantly better today than I did yesterday, and while I wasn’t well enough to go into Makers, I was able to do a bit of work from home. It really is difficult to learn things when you aren’t at your best.

I did more work on the Rails Yelp clone, of all days to need to work independently and from home, this was probably the best one. Most of the previous weekly challenges have had walkthroughs but they have given you the instructions of what you need to do, and you can look at the walkthroughs as a last resort. The way this week’s challenge is structured is that the entire week is built on walkthroughs. There’s been quite a bit less trying new things and significantly more following instructions. Probably good for my fragile state.

I’m actually surprised by how far I got through the challenge considering my state. I was lucky to have met a Makers graduate, Lawrence Hunt, at the Hardware event on Monday where he’d mentioned his blog had some tips for Facebook integration. This post helped me a lot.

My biggest issue today was getting the database relations to update, but with many git reset— hard’s and active record migrations I was able to get my database tables up and running and communicating with each other!

git reset — hard

Things I learned

  • Being sick is the worst
  • Coding sick is really hard
  • Active Record Migrations (One to many)

Things I want to focus on

  • Active Record Migrations (Many to many)

Things I’m struggling with

  • Nothing right now, I’m really looking forward to going back to Makers tomorrow.
