You’ve probably heard about the pen being mightier than the sword. It’s one of those clichés that is based in truth. The words we use, whether spoken or written, have impact. Sure, not every word will topple a government or bring eternal change to someone’s life. Nevertheless, it’s every writer’s responsibility to accurately convey the meaning of each word.
This is true in all forms of writing including notes, cover letters, blogs, emails, website content and social media feeds. Using the right words (in conjunction with the right grammar!) lets readers understand exactly what you want them to know. For instance, when writing to potential employers, use words that accurately describe you, your abilities, your potential and the value you add to the company. Use the power of words to identify yourself or brand.
Here are three ideas to make the power of words work in your favor:
· Be positive. Readers respond better to writing that makes them feel good. Even if you are reporting about a tragedy, craft it in a way that gives the reader hope. Otherwise, they may dismiss the piece as a lost cause and move their attention elsewhere.
· Be clear. Readers appreciate a clearly defined topic. This is especially true in business situations, where you want to keep things both identifiable and understandable.
· Be direct. Readers are annoyed by unnecessary words. Whether you are fleshing out a fictional story or a report for the boss, cut the fluff.
Keep these ideas in mind the next time you write, whether it is a 140-character shout-out, an update on your life, or a piece that could change your life. After all, as author Jodi Picoult said, “Words are like eggs dropped from great heights; you can no more call them back than ignore the mess they leave when they fall”.
