Let History Inspire the Growth of Your Business

Joseph Pulitzer

Society is fortunate to be able to document events for future generations. While some events are tragic, others are wonderful and can inspire good actions for years to come. At Pen In Hand, we like the positive side of life and hope to use this month’s blog to inspire greatness in everyone.

April is a month filled with positive historical events. Joseph Pulitzer was born and became a well-known journalist and publisher. William Shakespeare was born and wrote incredible plays and sonnets. William Randolph Hearst was born and became a publisher. The Library of Congress was established in 1800 and is now the world’s largest library. Even Noah Webster published his first dictionary of American-style English in the month of April. Wow — what a month!

You can continue this tradition of April goodness for yourself, your business, and those around you. Don’t worry if you need help with writing — that’s what Pen In Hand is all about. If you look at the examples above, some people can write, others can get the message out there, some can preserve history, and others clarify definitions to build a stronger language. By thinking about your message on a grand scale and then zooming in to look at it as a one-on-one conversation, new perspectives and value can be discovered. You can also discover the team around you that is ready to help.

If words are a daunting challenge, just make a few notes that can remind you of the ideas. It works best if you organize the notes — perhaps keep a chronological journal. Then, if you captured a message that deserves to be shared, you can return to your notes and create the message either by yourself or with help from a writer. For instance, Wilber Wright was born in April and flew the first airplane with his brother Orville. That flight could not have happened without the brothers collaborating on the design and documenting the evolution of their invention. Luckily for us, their work was well-documented for historical preservation and we continue to evolve the industry of flight.

In the last few blogs, we covered the topics of checking in with customers and improving your business. By now, the momentum should be growing and may feel overwhelming. By taking a step back and remembering the vision for your business, the team can be reminded of the value of good communication. It’s about recording the success, noting the warnings of failure, staying in touch, and developing your business into something better tomorrow than it is today. Maybe you’re not creating the next airplane — or maybe you are! Maybe it’s the next safety device, the next LED bulb for the landing strip or the instruction manual for flying the plane. Maybe you simply want to document your business so the next generation can smoothly continue the tradition. In every case, it’s important to write down the details and make it readable. If you need help making your mark on history, please reach out to Pen In Hand, LLC at info@peninhandllc.com. We’d be honored to make a difference.

Leave your mark for future generations.
