The perfect birthday gift? Getting robbed

I know you re-read the title, wondering if you’re either losing your mind or the writer is. Well, let me borrow a word or two from our beloved logical gender, “It’s not you, it’s me. I am the problem.”

Yes, I am losing my mind and with good reason.

Just four days after celebrating my birthday, I got robbed.

The truth is, I’m not new to this. I got robbed for the very first time when I was 17; till today I still shudder from the resounding slap I received before my Blackberry Z10 was snatched from me.

Two more times with the last one in 2019, I thought I had finally broken the jinx but apparently not. I know you’re wondering how this might have happened. The same amateurish-but-often-effective method: “Obtaining through the window” or what I like to think of as ‘window shopping.’ If you ever lived in a hostel or an area filled with students, you’d know stealing through the window is the easiest and most effective way for your valuables to be obtained.

While I accept responsibility for my carelessness even though it was the first time I was that reckless, it hit harder than I expected. Not because what they stolen was insanely expensive, or because I had gotten it not long ago, but because I always thought I was smarter than that.

So picture this:

It’s a beautiful Wednesday morning. You reach out to grab your phone from the corner where you kept it. Somehow you can’t find it. You get up from the bed and notice a weird stick propped by the bedroom wall and a gigantic tear in your window net.

I’m sure you have an idea of how that went. However, I still haven’t gotten an answer to the biggest question on my mind. How has someone who has been robbed thrice make this type of rookie mistake? In all, it was definitely the worse start to my day. I wasn’t not sure if I should cry or laugh but obviously the tears came anyway.

Truth is, no one ever really get used to being robbed… especially in your home. I mean, inside the walls of your home, you’re supposed to feel the safest, not the opposite. And this leaves a very terrible feeling of vulnerability that is hard to shake off. But this is Nigeria.

On the bright side, the thieves were kind enough to keep my phone pouch and SIM card right by the window outside. That’s a manifestation, you know. I mean, doesn’t that mean they are confident I can always get the exact same phone so I can use the pouch and just insert my SIM card? Wonderful, I know.

I don’t know how many people it happens to, but I mean, getting robbed right after your birthday? A memorable experience, I’d say.

Who was prepared for this?

Song of the week: You In My Face by Tems. As a big fan of Sade, there’s something delightful about You In My Face. The melody, Tems’s voice, everything was insanely beautiful. If you’ve got elite taste in music, do give it a listen and I’m sure you’ll love it 🤗

If you enjoyed reading this, please clap for me as many as 50 times, share your thoughts in the comments, and spread the ‘good news.’ ❤️
