I read that comment and thought something very similar.

Becky and Lindsay,

I think that the objectification of women is so much a part of our culture that you have programmed yourself to ignore all but the most direct manifestations of it. It’s like David Foster Wallace’s story about the fish asking, “What the hell is water?”

We learn early to avoid eye contact, to wait for the next elevator or maybe take the stairs, to dodge a too friendly hug from a too friendly co-worker, and to say, “He couldn’t possibly mean that,” knowing that he probably did. Or we keep the parts that make us feel safe and — without even being aware of it — block out the rest.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
