Always be honest and transparent — Finally, smart organizations are transparent when it comes to sustainability — warts and all. Most Chilean Salmon farmers now publish sustainability reports. They also share environmental data via the Global Salmon Initiative. Transparency fosters trust, though it also comes with criticism when areas for improvement are evident. Trust leads to collaboration, and collaboration, to improvement.

I think with large teams, it’s incredibly important to make sure all team members have mentors and sponsors who understand their contributions and can advocate for them at work. I think it’s important for all business leaders at the moment to take note of what’s going on in the world and there’s no hiding from what’s happening to our environment. Across all aspects of my life both personal and professional I am feeling the impact of the current state of the environment. It was important not just for me but the team that I work with that we helped action this change and we have the tools to this through media and events.
I wish someone had told me not to look so hard for role models. I recall when I was a young manager and was first being considered for a promotion to director level. At the time, I didn’t see anyone at that level who looked or talked like me. There were very few women and very few people with an interest in promoting environmental issues. Sometimes you need to be the role model you are seeking.
