It Hurts Just A Little
A short rant about boy-shaming on Instagram
I don’t have self-esteem problems. But if I did, high school would be pretty shitty for me. There are many sources of this boy-shaming epidemic, but if I had to choose, Instagram is the favorite platform for people who like to make us feel ugly. We have all heard of the objectification of women, and while some of us have heard that men are objectified as well, it is certainly less well known, and that needs to change.
Let’s start with this small snip from an Instagram account called “jaw”. It has over 100,000 followers, and guess what they post? Literally just jawlines of men. Why do so many people care about a genetic trait that has nothing at all to do with how the guy acts? I have no clue, and I don’t want to.
Then there’s this picture of two boys at a game taking a picture together. The caption reads: “Boy to the left please😍 😅”. I promise I am not offended by a whole lot, but this is revolting. What if I posted a picture of two girls and said only one was pretty? It would cause quite a stir. The girl empowerment movement and feminism has accomplished a great deal for girls today. However, nothing has been done to let boys know that there is no reason to be upset that they don’t have an abnormally sharp jaw, or that they don’t have a six pack, the list could go on and on.
Without personally knowing the boy on the right, I don’t know how he reacted to this. If it were me, I would be mortified and question why I don’t look attractive to girls, or what I could do to myself to fix it. My cousin recently told me how a girl he knew sent a picture from a boy-shaming Instagram account saying “Why can’t boys in our grade look more like this?”. That’s revolting.
If you are a high school boy who has experienced boy-shaming, just know that you are perfect in every way, and don’t change anything because you are amazing. If you are a high school girl who has liked or follows a boy-shaming account, all I can say is I hope you don’t pick your partner based on this because you will learn that jawbones don’t dictate character.
