How We Developed a Unique Experience for Non-Tech-Savvy Email Marketers

Our strongest passion at Pepo Campaigns is to marry world-class user experiences with robust and scalable technology solutions to make a positive impact on people and organisations.

While our team is best-known for giving birth to consumer-facing applications like Fab.com and Hem.com, behind the scenes we have a long history of developing robust back-end systems and internal tools that enabled our teams to scale with our audiences.

One of the areas that required a lot of internal focus and development effort in our previous experience was customer touchpoint marketing. Our internal teams required the ability to send billions of email messages and push notifications regularly to our users, with intensive A/X testing, segmentation, reporting, analysis, revenue attribution models and seamless integration with all of our internal and external systems.

Until 2015 we relied mostly on external tools for managing those millions of customer touch-points. Our team stretched those tools to the limits and built our own internal front-end interfaces and back-end integrations, but we were always frustrated by the high costs and inflexibility of relying on 3rd party solutions, especially for email marketing.

Also, because essential parts of our businesses were increasingly moving to the Amazon AWS cloud, it became maddening frustrating that we were paying exorbitant fees for proprietary 3rd party solutions while AWS was making it increasingly possible to build more robust solutions to the same problems, at a fraction of the cost.

In 2015, fed-up with 3rd party solutions, we decided to build our own email marketing solution from scratch, on top of AWS. We quickly found that we were able to deliver better and more flexible features, smoother experiences, and all at much lower costs than the 3rd party services.

Pepo Campaigns came to life by packaging our internal service for other companies to use and benefit from.

We have developed a unique experience in the first place because we ourself were a customer of email marketing that via a long and passionate journey had the opportunity and requirement to build our own solution to the challenges we experienced.

We know from first hand experience which are the pain points in email marketing, the ones that would completely change your experience as a marketer.

This has led us to take a customer-centric/user-centric approach to building Pepo Campaigns. This can be seen best in the overall user experience of Pepo Campaigns, including our reinterpreting of the different modules — i.e. subscribers lists, email campaigns, automated workflows, template building — and the flows within the platform.

Second, we believe that technology advancements and cost efficiencies should be passed along to customers. Our solution gives a unique and simple experience where no code, setup or Amazon AWS account is required from the user side, so that developers can stay focused on the technology while the marketing team can focus on the message.

In recent years, emerging cloud services such as Amazon Web Services have enabled companies to scale their Internet applications with unparalleled reliability at a fraction of prior costs. Email marketing is no exception, as AWS’s Simple Email Service has cut the cost of sending emails by more than 90% while ensuring the highest certified quality for inbox deliverability.

With Pepo Campaigns we are now making this accessible to everyone.
