Steps on How to Highlight Duplicate Using Conditional Formatting

In this section, we will explore highlighting duplicates with conditional formatting.

Step 1: Open your Google Sheet

To begin, open the Google Sheet that contains the data you want to highlight duplicates for. If you don’t have a sheet already set up, you can create a new one by clicking on “Blank” from the main Google Sheets page.

Step 2: Select the Range

Next, select the range of cells that you want to check for duplicates. To select a range, click on the first cell and drag your mouse over the range of cells that you want to select.

Step 3: Conditional Formatting

Once you have selected the range of cells, navigate to the Format menu and select Conditional formatting. This will open a sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen.

In the Conditional formatting sidebar, select the Single colour tab. Then, from the Format cells if dropdown, select Custom formula is from the dropdown values.

In the Value or formula field, enter the following COUNTIF formula. Assuming we’re highlighting the cell range we selected earlier.

=COUNTIF(A16:C32, A16)>1

This formula counts the number of times a cell in column A16 to C32 appears in the range and highlights it if it appears more than once. This will highlight the first duplicate value.

Next, choose the colour you want to use to highlight duplicates. You can do this by clicking on the colour box next to the Formatting style dropdown and selecting the colour you want.

Finally, click on the Done button to apply the rule. The cells that contain duplicate data will now be highlighted in the colour you selected.
