According to the Myers Briggs Foundation, which actively collected thousands of personality type scores from 1987–2002, around 26% of all test takers scored higher on the intuitive side of the scale.
Why I’m particularly interested in this stat, other than I am highly intuitive, is the rest of the personality traits(introversion/extraversion, thinker/feeler and judger/perceiver) are split around 50/50.
It’s not until we come to intuitive/sensor that the scale tips dramatically in the sensor direction.
So why are only 26% of people more intuitive? Notice I said more intuitive, as everyone has the ability to access their inner knowing, just for some it occurs naturally as our core way of being.
As I understand it, scoring higher on the sensory aspect of the scale means a person is more connected to the details right in front of them, accessed primarily through the five senses. What you can directly observe, smell, taste, touch, hear. Being sensory should be considered an evolutionary advantage, as we need the majority of humans present in the here and now, paying attention to what is.
On the other hand, gathering and processing information intuitively is also a evolutionary advantage, albeit a more holistic process. Synthesizing all the data I’ve ever noticed, collected and catalogued for forty-five years. Every song, every visual image, phrases that captured my attention in thousands of books I’ve read so far.
My intuitive mind is busy, busy, busy creating pathways and intersections between seemingly disparate ideas, thoughts and visuals —until there it is — the pattern emerges.
The aha moment, or what I lovingly refer to in mystical terms as a Divine download. Since I believe I’m Divinely created, it stands to reason this gift of synthesis and connection comes from one source.
I believe these pathways are not just stored in my individual consciousness, but in a much wider field that’s available to all. Jung termed it the collective unconscious, the 80% of our group iceberg floating below sea level. A realm of powerful instincts and archetypes; most aren’t even aware this web of consciousness exists. Or even how to access it.
What’s exciting right now is watching the 26%ers rapidly awakening to this added dimension of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. We’ve always been receiving, but in the past we may have dismissed an intuitive message as mere coincidence or questioned it’s validity.
Perhaps it’s because these messages often arrive in strange form — visions, dreams, sounds, energetic shifts, spirit animal encounters, you name it.
Here’s a great example. Tonight I walked in the forest at dusk and for the first time in years, was surrounded by a family of fireflies. An awe-inspiring light show, indeed.
Less than an hour before, I had been engaged in an online conversation with a young woman in a entrepreneur group we both belong to.
A fitness coach, she posted a picture of herself in a very provocative pose, showing off the results of her workout ethic. She explained to our group she only coaches women who want to look hot, be above average, embrace their overachiever and make a ton of money. And no, I’m not editing her words, this is how she described her ideal client.
Backstory: she’d always felt like the wallflower, the plain Jane, the girl in the corner who wanted to be pretty and sexy and now look at how far she’d come. She wasn’t going back.
I saw this as an opportunity to share my own journey with self-esteem, appearance, type-A behavior and what I’ve learned as a result. In my 20s and 30s I was driven, very focused on success, on achievement. I based my entire self-worth on my career, who I’d met, the next promotion I received, what successful projects I took on. I was a tomboy as a child, so I was learning at the time to embrace my feminine mystique.
It’s been a conscious effort for me to relax, to let things flow rather than push, allow them to emerge and unfold. I’ve learned how self-driven urgency strongly impacts my health and inner peace.
Which is exactly what I shared with her right before I clicked over to research the meaning of the firefly as a spirit animal…
‘For humans, the firefly brings an abundance of positive and inspiring messages that should be internalized and never forgotten. First, our physical appearance does not define us. Rather, it’s what is inside our hearts and minds that truly represent what each of us are made of, and we should take care of this part of our soul and allow it to shine.
This spiritual totem’s message dictates that we must be conscious, pay attention to intricacies, and exercise persistence if we wish to achieve success in our own lives. However, this is not to say that we should run ourselves into the ground with efficiency. Fireflies do not use heat to ignite their lights, symbolizing that we need not burn ourselves out in the pursuit of our goals. The process should be natural, free-flowing, and jovial so as to not extinguish our guiding light.’
Bingo. Intuitive messaging at it’s finest.
The encounter was not entirely for the young women with whom I shared my story. Who knows? She may not even be ready to hear what I shared yet.
The fireflies brought this message for me.
Remember the path you’ve walked, Bevin and stay true to the wisdom you’ve gained. Trust and believe in yourself. Be of service as often as you can, but remember to always care for you, as well. Focus on the meaning, always the deeper meaning.
So what’s the evolutionary advantage of the 26%ers? To remind our world of the hidden meaning underneath the surface of daily existence:
You are more than the body your soul inhabits, more than the job you do, the neighborhood you live in, the possessions you collect or the number in your bank account. There’s a grander purpose for all who came here at this time.
Like the firefly, you hold within you a unique bioluminescence.
It’s time for your light to shine.
