Thoughts on “How to Be Single”

How relatable is the 2016 movie featuring Dakota Fanning and Rebel Wilson?

Perfectly Inappropriate

(The following was written while watching the movie on a flight in 2017)

I’m watching the movie how to be single and I’m not sure what to think of it. I heard that it “accurately portrays single life in the modern day” so I was curious what that meant. Or, as a single man in the modern day, if I’d relate/agree with it.

It starts with Alice (Dakota Johnson) taking a break from her boyfriend of 4 years so she can “find herself.”

She wants to take time apart to discover herself. She ends up hooking up with Tom, a guy who owns a local bar who tells her what “all guys” want. For women to basically leave after sex and not get close to them. He doesn’t keep food at his place. He even shuts off the water so “hung over girls have to leave to survive.” That sort of thing. He tells her that’s what all guys really want.

By far my least favorite scene in the movie was when Alice hooks up with Tom for the first time. She knows it’s a one-time thing. She knows she doesn’t have feelings for him. She knows nothing is to come of it (and he proves it the next day) yet she does it anyway, primarily under the advice of Rebel Wilson’s disgusting character.
