Styling Taste Great Cuisine Food Shoot
I recently had the pleasure of acting as prop stylist on a very fun food shoot with a good friend, the talented chef and business owner Serena Crawford of Taste Great Cuisine. This particular shoot was for photos for Taste Great Cuisine’s new website and marketing material.
Before the shoot Serena and I had met and discussed a theme. Serena wanted to create a sophisticated contemporary atmosphere and it was with this in mind that I chose tablecloths, plates, glasses, and accessories in the right colours to complement the dishes she would be cooking.
I was greeted by delicious aromas coming from the kitchen when I arrived at the shoot. Serena had been hard at work for hours, seasoning and preparing the fishes and meats, and assembling each course’s accompaniments. The Caribbean inspired menu consisted of everything from cornmeal porridge, to ackee and saltfish, tangy BBQ chicken wings, and fragrant curry goat with rice.
The environment around the food — the colours, decoration, and table arrangement — is just as important to the enjoyment of a meal as the food itself. A well-designed setting can enhance a diner’s pleasure and since I was in charge of the setting I wanted to ensure this environment was just as captivating as the food itself.
Also on the shoot was a brilliant food stylist. Working closely with Serena and the photographer, she showed me industry techniques to make food the food look as good in photographs as it does in real life. Being a stylist definitely requires a great eye for detail. Yes, the food is centre stage, but the stage is made attractive by knowing how to frame and light the food, by choosing the right colours to make the food stand out, and by the placement of cutlery and glasses which give an image movement and vitality.
I quickly realised that half the battle — and fun — in shooting food is styling it to get the perfect composition in order to really tell the story behind the food.
During the day I managed to steal a few minutes with Serena to her what can customers expect from her products and services:
“Tastes Great Cuisine speaks for itself: the food tastes great! I come from a family where food is in the blood. All of Taste Great dishes are prepared with love and passion. We go for the authentic Caribbean taste with a very contemporary and modern spin on presentation.”
It was a demanding day but I loved every minute of working with the team and thoroughly enjoyed exploring my creativity in a new field. Not only do I have a fresh appreciation for the time and preparation that goes into cooking, I believe a nicely prepared meal is definitely worthy of beautiful presentation.
