The state of legacy software is a sorry state indeed. Part of the blame rests on poor practices by developers which is encouraged by cost saving measures from the bean counters. Remove all the best practices in the name of costs savings and then fire your senior staff that have all the details stuffed in their heads. Outsource to Uruguay, Utah or Uganda and you’ve saved money, at least on the surface. Eventually a day like today happens and you have neither the process or people to recover quickly.
