Why Would You Need a GRE Waiver Request Letter?
While around 80% or more of the graduate programs will require you to submit your GRE test scores many will allow you to apply for a waiver if you meet certain requirements. Usually these requirements are work experience based allowing those applicants that have been within employment and may not be able to free up time to complete the GRE to still apply.
The GRE or Graduate Record Examination is a 3 hours and 45 minute examinations that is split into 6 sections. Different programs will put a different amount of weight on your scores but it is often a major part of their decision making process; so you should only apply for a waiver if you are sure that having a waiver will not harm your application chances and you know how to write a GMAT waiver letter.
Writing an Effective GRE Waiver Letter
One of the first things that you should always do is go and take a look at a GRE waiver letter sample. This will provide you with a lot of ideas and guidance as to how your letter should be structures and what it should contain. However do review the sample carefully and don’t just blatantly copy it. Your personal reasons are likely to be very different to that contained within any sample so only use them for guidance and ideas.
Writing an effective waiver letter need not be a chore if you follow these steps:
Always check your eligibility with the program that you are applying to. Most will inform you if you are able to apply for a waiver or not and under what circumstances they will grant you a waiver. If you clearly do not meet their expectations for a waiver then there is little point in writing your letter.
Write your letter using a standard business letter template; however some programs have specific forms that should be used so always check with the program before you start.
Address your letter to an actual person if you can find the correct name to use.
Open your letter by stating that you are writing to request a waiver for your GRE scores.
Provide your reasons for requesting a GRE waiver. Make your reasons clear, concise and factual.
Summarize your reasons and request that they reply to you with their decision.
Thank them for their consideration and sign off the letter with “yours sincerely”.
