No matter how old you are when you begin taking music lessons, it can be kind of nerve wracking going into your first one — especially if you don’t know your teacher!

As a freelance musician, Peter Abbonizio offers music lessons focusing on string instruments, percussion instruments, and MIDI controllers. Read on to find out more about what you can expect in your very first music lesson.

  1. If you haven’t met your music teacher yet, they will introduce themselves and get to know you. They might ask about why you chose to play your instrument, what kinds of music you like, and why you chose to take lessons. If you already have some experience in singing or playing your instrument, they will try to asses what level you are at.
  2. Your teacher will go through all the basics about your instrument, such as the mechanics of how to hold it and play it. If you’re specifically taking singing lessons, you teacher will probably go through some scales and warm up exercises, and might even have you sing a song you like!
  3. If you are learning an instrument, your teacher will have you play some basic notes. Don’t worry if you aren’t particularly good at it yet — that’s why you’re here!
  4. At the end of the lesson, you teacher will give you “homework” about what you should practice for next week.
