Look Like an Adult: How to Succeed and Survive in Law School

You may have worked in law school before. Maybe you haven’t. Either way, you’re a law student in a room full of people who will become your professional network. Professors are impactful people. So don’t show up to class looking like a slob.

You don’t need shirt and tie. As a male, shoot for a button down and jeans or khakis. Not quite business casual, but somewhat dressed up enough to grab a drink if you needed to. I’m male and have no ability to identify women’s clothing, but the same rules apply. Look presentable!

Allow me to regale you with the cautionary tale of The Dude. The Dude was in my section. He was nicknamed The Dude because his stylistic inclinations can only be described as that of the character from The Big Lebowski. His hair resembled that of a conscientious objector. He crushed the t shirt, sweats, and flip flops like an animal. Very Devil May Care.

Fast forward two years. The Dude is well on his way to legal success. Exceptional work in the classroom, the firm, and the job search process. He traded his look in for a fresh haircut and a new wardrobe. He looks the part. BUT I still call him The Dude. Everybody does. Because first impressions matter and stick.

Get off on the right foot with your new peer network. There’s no need to blow everyone out of the water, but take a little time to dress like an adult.
