Trust.

I just watched David Witt and Patrick Mouratoglou, Venus and Serena Williams coaches respectively, interviewed. David and Patrick have been their coaches for a long time and both described how many years it took to get the sisters to come out of their shell and finally trust them. Once the trust was there, the relationship was ‘magical’….for both the coach and the player. Trust and respect is what makes a relationship between a patient and a physician so therapeutic; developing this trust has been the backbone of the medical profession and its most potent force for success. This force has largely been destroyed in a society where success is measured in dollars, where freedoms have been unencumbered by any sense of social responsibility, where life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness doesn’t seem to equate to the right to decent healthcare: a disconnect, a paradox, a denial of one that is necessary to make the others possible. Dominance and dollars are king. Doctors are pawns. Doesn’t leave much room for trust.

take care, dok.
