Everyone should find or invent a hippie trail for themselves and if following someone else’s trail is the only way you can start, go with that, the ideas will come. The point of travelling is to strip away the amenities and try to get close to the culture and people you are visiting. Remove the “exotic” and other consumerist elements of the perspective and just be there. This way you will learn about your “privilege” and what that privilege provides and inhibits, and that your privilege is not all its said to be. You will learn that all these people have wisdom and knowledge that you will not find on the news or the web or on some blogger page because it will be in the context of your life. Go for that “experience” because what awaits you is not what you expect, and not what your friends experienced, and not what you see on the internet.
