Medium, you broke my reading routine

…and now I’m feeling dumb. Or maybe I am dumb as I can’t figure out your new homepage. Or maybe it is your homepage that is dumb.

Either way, before the new homepage was forced on me, my reading routine was fairly simple and effective. I opened your app, I looked at the row of publications I follow, tapped the ones that had x amount of new stores waiting and got to the content I most likely was interested to read.

It was easy; I was in control. Every so often I’d venture out into a suggested story or select another topic, but on most days I was satisfied by what my publications offered and I felt I’ve accomplished a good amount of reading.

Yeah, it’s that 2nd row I miss dearly (pic MediumLink)

But now, with this new homepage I’m lost in an almost endless list of stories and articles that I’m not looking for. Unless I have you confused with facebook — in which case, carry on Mark Zuckerberg, with whatever you do — , this experience is not what I expect from an app with quality content.

This is what I get when I open the app now:

“You might like”
I see four stories I don't care about.

Self (Suggested for you)”
What are you insinuating, Medium? That I have issues? If I had, why would you want to remind me that I should be working on my efficiency, my life goals, my posture, my confidence, my stock of paper bag to hyperventilate into…

On top of that, of the four suggested stories one is members only. Nice tease.

“Lit (Suggested for you)”
What does that even mean "lit"? Is that a category or a list of articles that are popular today? I’m old, Medium, I don’t have swag to get lit, fam.

And of four stories two are members only!

“Marketing (Suggested for you)”
Again, not interested. Next.
And again of four stories two are members only. You really believe you could hook me on a membership that easily?

“New from your network”
Now we're talking! Finally some content I'm looking for... but presented in what must be a very smart algorithm, because I don't know how they are ordered. It's definitely not by publishing time, which I'd be expecting. Also not by publisher, which could be useful. So, even for the content I want to follow, I'm left in some exploration mode.

Medium, this is too hard! I come to Medium to find new articles by publishers I'm interested in, not to scroll thru lists and lists and more lists to eventually find something to read.

But wait! There’s more!

“Today's top stories”
Sure, why not. Maybe I'll have a look, probably not.

“Your reading list”
My bookmarked stories... You know, I'm tired and exhausted by now. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

I didn’t read anything, I didn’t learn anything, and I’m feeling dumb. Well, Medium, let me know when you’ll prioritize the content the user is interested again and I’ll return to appreciating your stories again. Thx.
