Factors of Homophily in social in Social Media
I feel in my opinion homophily is caused by a physiological need as well as chemicals in our body that respond to the attention that one receives. For example, A user receives a friend request from someone that is very attractive. She is very fit works out and does modeling. The user himself is very fit works, out and is a model. Since the chemicals and endorphins as well as the physiological need to “fit in” is very strong he accepts the friends request. When reviewing the users profile friends, all his friends work out and very attractive. This can be also viewed with other similar interests as well. The need for social acceptance is very strong as well. When looking at the generation of social media its everywhere. This is a very easy tool to stay connected with people who live both close and far away. Its a great tool to use when wanting to stay connected with people who the user is drawn via the same interests.

Discuss the concept of homophily and how this may result from social media use. Discuss some of the benefits of homophily in social media.
The concept of homophily is having the same interests as someone else and gravitating towards the same interests’ others. An phycological need or feeling of acceptance stands out. The physiological need to “fit in”. That is always crucial part of human behavior. This plays a huge part in social media, since some humans are shy and introverted, or show introverted behaviors, this would require an easy access so to speak, to be able to bond with someone of the same interests. Using social media as a tool to be able to tap in to the social need of acceptance. Let’s face it, it’s much easier to review posts and hit the “add friend button” then it is to physically meet someone in person. This gives a way for users to meet more people in less time with the same interests as well as asking for acceptance in a very easy passive way.
Gaining acceptance through social media can be dangerous as well. This can create a false sense of acceptance, as the user gains popularity through social media. This can lead to “friends” that have accepted them are not true friends. In other words, gaining friends on social media can create a false acceptance of a “friend”. Gaining a mass amount of friends that are on Face book or other social media sites are not “true” friends. The social media group of friends do not know the user personally but only share some common interests to fulfill the need of acceptance. When the need of acceptance has been fulfilled the “friend” will be dropped or only looked at when the user finds some interest in them. Being dropped or ignored by a friend on social media can make the person feel a sense of abandonment. This can create feelings of co-dependency through social media. In other words, this can make the user “like” every photo, every comment and basically anything his or her social media friends post.
Overall, the need of acceptance has been branded in us. We are all human and have the need to socialize with other humans. How great the need can depend the social media technology on todays market.
