This article was written with high cost California as the background which is an exceptional case but by no means alone and still a valid example of homelessness exacerbated by high costs in any part of the country.

I would make a point that this problem seems to show an example of the breakdown of the family in this affluent society. Herb Manown has four children in the area and I don’t know how many siblings but still ended up on the street. I doubt this would happen to him if living in a 3rd world country where the family still helps one another. It seems that affluence has a way of changing/destroying values in a society. You can see it happening even in 3rd world countries as wealth increases.
