How I Make Coffee
I’m not one of those people who can’t imagine functioning with a cup to start their day. In fact, I don’t find the waking powers of coffee to be that helpful or effective. I drink coffee because I love the taste and appreciate the ritual of preparing a cup. Time spent making coffee is ponder my day, ruminate on a problem or just to stare out the window.
Over the years, I’ve tried many coffee techniques of varying complication. I’ve used everything from Mr. Coffee brewers and French presses to more exoctic devices like syphon brewers and cold brew towers. Though playing with coffee toys is fun, I no longer have the patience for it on a daily basis. I’ve settled on a coffee technique that combines the right mix of taste with simplicity.
Immersion Coffee Brewing
My favorite way to make coffee is with an immersion brewer. Immersion brewers are similar to French presses in that the coffee and water steep together for a few minutes before running through a filter. The biggest difference between the two is that the immersion brewer uses a paper filter — which lets you use a finer grind level than the press.
This is the recipe I use to make my coffee. It makes 12oz, but if you prefer less or more coffee you can easily tweak it up or down. I’ve found that the end result still tastes great if the measurements aren’t taken with scientific precision.
