As a farther of two and involved in the rapidly changing IT industry I completely agree that we need to develop technology skills and understanding from an early age. A foundation of logic reasoning, problem solving and coding will be an important set of skills for future generations.
I get worried though at the weight some place on this. There is still an important place for more traditional experience (languages, communication, empathy, cultural understanding, leadership). These are born out of a rich, broad, relevant education.
My experience to date with the school education system in relation to this has not been positive, although my 10 year old can do things in PowerPoint I can only dream of !
Local initiatives like the Maker Club are great and need to be encouraged and supported. I think it will be largely down to groups like this and parents themselves to inspire and develop our kids in the way a lot of us believe is necessary. I would hope the local Brighton technology scene see it as an opportunity for them to get involved in this education change, it can only be good for their own future growth to help develop the right kind of workforce for the future.
