Beating The Winter Blues

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays in full swing, we often lose sight of the incoming winter and the job it does to our energy levels and immune systems.

There’s no guarantee that we will, or won’t catch a whiff of the winter blues, but as the old adage goes, the best measures are preventative ones. And it all starts with healthy lifestyle choices that can turn out to be game changers.

Here’s a primer that many experts agree, are top of the list while entering and combating this pesky season. Steps that could be incorporated on a daily basis, making our immune systems stronger and our bodies better protected.

Nutrition

As the cold weather moves in, our bodies react by storing excess fat. A diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates are a great way to shield the body with healthier foods.

Water and green tea should also be consumed. Water is a terrific nutrient that helps to flush and cleanse the system. Many of the anti-toxins found in green tea can lessen and even resist any triggers lurking in our bodies.

All sugar intake should be limited, especially over the winter. High sugar levels can compromise the immune system, thus negating the positives from an otherwise healthy diet.

Sleep

The immune system is most effective when we are fully rested, and most vulnerable when we are sleep-deprived. If a setback should arrive, a better rested body will often recover faster. The best measure is to make sure you’re getting plenty of quality sleep.

Exercise

A weekly regiment of five or more days of exercise can cut the risk of being bed-ridden by fifty percent.

By taking steps such as these, you might learn to enjoy and savor the season, instead of dreading it. Not only that, your body will be more than happy to kick the winter blues and take you along for the ride.
