Ennis, Texas established: 1871
Ennis, Ireland established: 1210

Like many of the towns in the area, Ennis was established as part of the westward expansion of the railroads and the growing of cotton. It’s named after Cornelius Ennis. It’s population is now about 23,000. Today it’s noted for the Texas Motorplex (as opposed to the Texas Motor Speedway which is located in Ft. Worth), the National Polka Festival which draws close to 50,000 people, and the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival.

Ennis, Ireland was established about 1210 near two rivers. Its name comes from “Inis” which means “island.” It’s most noted for a Franciscan Friary which operated for about 400 years, and it’s also the administrative capital of County Claire.

After some online searching I found a bookstore in Ennis, Ireland which had some postcards available. They were kind enough to ship them to me, and I was able to send them to the postcard group along with an Ennis, TX hand cancellation. Unfortunately, the clerk at the post office wasn’t willing to hand back a blank one to me, so it ran through the system and ended up with a double postmark. I may try again in the future since Ennis is only a 20 minute drive.

Here are the two postcards the Bookshop sent me:

If you happen to visit Ennis, TX be sure to stop by the Ennis Welcome Center. They also have some good Ennis postcards available.
