Temple, Texas

Temple is a town with a population of about 82,000 about 35 miles south of Waco. It’s east of Fort Cavazos (previously known as Fort Hood). Like most of the towns in this area, it sprang up as a result of the railroad industry. It’s named after Bernard Moore Temple — a civil engineer and railroad executive for the Santa Fe railroad.

Most people not familiar with Temple might assume there’s a religious aspect to the name, but that’s not the case. However, I added it to the list and decided to mail out some temple/church related postcards — one from the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, UT, and the rest of Westminster Abbey in London, England.

I’ve not spent much time in Temple although have driven through on the highway many times. I didn’t realize how much Czech influence the town had. West, Texas (the town, not west Texas) is notable for this, but Temple is home to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.

When I first arrived in Temple and went to the post office there was a huge line. After hanging out at a nearby coffee shop I went back after a few hours and the line had died down quite a bit, although there were still several people and the clerks were trying to clear them out before closing time.

I was able to get the postcards mailed and managed to get a decent postmark for myself to scan in.
