You totally forgot to mention who brought this design to the mobile/touch world in the first place and was laughed at by Apple and Google some years ago. Microsoft with its since rebranded “Metro Design Language”. It was strict “content first” and bold typo with simple icons.

And by the way: the medium website is an utter design mess. Especially the comment section.
