This is great article. I’ve been in travel for over twenty years (corporate, personal travel blog, and now leisure space as travel advisor). I hate the new system of “recommended for you” as it excludes viable (often lower priced) options. I remember an employee complaining about a Ritz Carlton in a city, I looked at TripAdvisor and told him the #1 property in the city was known for it’s free hotdogs and popcorn in the lobby. He stayed at the Ritz. Each person has their own idea of what’s best.
At the end of the day, it’s about money — what started as a good service with honest feedback created a monster. I hate that everywhere I go I get a “review us on TripAdvisor” card, email or other follow-up. I’m not a fan that small businesses rely on these reviews (real and fake).
I have my own travel blog to share my experiences and am now a travel advisor to help plan trips but still have folks say “it’s not #1 on TripAdvisor” argh!
