My maternal grandmother bestowed on me a great gift – a love of irony, but there is a strange thing happening in our world today, epitomised of course by DT; the ability to recognise and understand irony is diminishing. Fortunately though at least on my little islands Shakespeare’s plays are still being staged – often with young actors and modern twists. I attended a production of Othello recently and noted with delight the intense reactions of young adults to the power of the play, part of which of course relies on some appalling ironies – the Master at work.
