Book Love

As a volunteer on a committee, I get access to a wonderful co-working space in Downtown Denver. I stop in from time to time when I need a place to work between meetings.

Today I met Nick by the coffee bar. He was chatting with a fellow in the kitchen area and I joined the conversation. He mentioned he was a software engineer for a company with an office there, and I, in turn, that I am a writer. As an emerging author I shared the copy of my book that I had on hand with me.

He took a look through it am immediately connected with it. He took a moment to read the poem “The Bridge You’ll Never Cross” and commented on the importance of not fearing things that haven’t happened.

He then flipped through to read February 11. He told me this book would make a perfect gift for his wife for Valentine’s Day. Then he mentioned they had five (yes, five) children. Most recently they had twins. More than half of his brood is still in, or just getting out of, diapers. They certainly have their hands full. He said after their first two they hadn’t expected more kids due to some of his wife’s serious health challenges they’ve had to deal with as a couple — but she overcame — and then there you go!

I asked if he wanted a signed copy, and he said he would be delighted. I took out my special signing sparkly purple pen. I signed it to his wife, starting with “Happy Valentine’s Day 2016!” He asked if I accepted GoogleWallet, and I didn’t but said I was happy to figure it out. I downloaded the app and gave him my email. In a moment, he’d pinged some money into my account. Sharing the book with someone who appreciates it and has someone else in mind who will appreciate it — is really special. Getting paid to create art and re-invest in my creative life is magical.

We parted ways, and I went back to my work and he to his. Then it occurred to me, I should get a photo to celebrate. I appreciated his passion for the book and for his work, his wife and his family. I am so grateful each and every time a copy of the book “Inspiration and Ideals: Thoughts for Every Day” finds a happy home.
