Nice setup!

Mine is going the other way around: I screwed the Pi 2 on a wooden plank (in a corner) so that I can use the rest of the space for breadboards, arduinos, and other stuff (like Mindstorms blocks).

For remote access, I am using the RDP protocol (apt-get install xrdp) so that there is no need to install a VNC client on the desktop machine when the desktop is using Windows (basically, using Remote Desktop Connection).

And for a nice console, with MSYS/MinGW/Gitbash
