News Beyond Broadcast

Being born in the age of the internet, today less than ever do I turn on a cable television. Since I was in middle school I had not had a TV in my house connected to any kind of dish or cable. For all this time my news always came from another source. Almost always I am finding my news on the internet. With a vast amount of platforms on the internet to create news content it has become more personable how we consume our news. I find my self relying on articles posted by others on forum type sights such as Reddit. Another area I get news from is on YouTube. With a large number of independent creators working hard to be the new face of news, there are many reputable channels that are becoming the news rooms for the youth.
For this semester I am interested in following the Motherboard channel produced by Vice on HBO and YouTube. This is a channel producing intriguing yet beautifully done reports on the world of new technology.

Mother Board is a sub site of vice which works as a fully engaging media plat form dedicated to sharing and portraying the future of technology. Mother Board strives by finding topics that may not surface to the general public and creating an intriguing story told in a format the captures the audience. Using the power of social media, cinema and simple blog post, Mother Board can provide an interesting well rounded story. The key factor I see being a large part of Mother Boards success is there way in how they engage younger crowds. They make mundane or nerdy subjects fascinating and almost thrilling to the average adult.
When I scroll through the content that Mother Board post on their social media I begin to ask how serious is there reporting. I ask this question because with the reputation they hold, at times they post articles or create post I feel are unnecessary.
Mother Board is a platform providing news but reporting on ridiculous non-tech related subjects such as the post above I believe does the website more harm then help. My question would be how could Mother board create fun social media post that will grab peoples attention without completely straying away from their basis of technology. I am going to be looking at how posting habits based on informative technology stories compare to those that are intended to be fun and wacky.
Mother Board approaches each social media site in its intended way. On Face Book they post a lot of links to videos and articles that are being made on their website. On Twitter they have a little bit more diverse posting habit. On their twitter you can find links to articles, videos, photos and gifs.
Unlike other news reporting sites, Mother Board has a tumblr account. Here is where a lot more fun content is posted. A lot more of the goofy side of the technological world can be found posted on there tumblr. A lot more gifs, memes, and silly videos are found here. This kind of posting on tumblr is appropriate since the audience on the site is more likely to engage with fun content. On Instagram I feel their style could be munch improved. From a first glance their page looks messy. When you begin to dive into individual post you find there are a lot of post that feel out of place or almost too low of quality for Mother Board.
Mother Board does not seem to be automated. All the articles written have credited writers. The post made on twitter and Facebook I feel could be automated, since a lot of those post are links to the website’s articles with a small comment. These type of post could be automated to be made when ever a new article is written.
Ultimately I chose to follow mother board for how well they produce story reporting videos in a beautiful cinematic nature. With this though they are not perfect at creating content in other areas, which leaves me curious in what ideas I could come up with to improve their other areas of media.
