Design is not a hobby. It’s an integral part of commerce and at it’s highest level, an artform for problem-solving.

You are producing something of value when you practice design.

A person reading or passively listening to music are both examples of consuming not producing.

Acting and Dancing are full-time jobs and careers for many people.

I don’t think it was ‘incredibly ignorant’ to suggest there is no market for people to enjoy their job as a part of their life. He illustrated his point very clearly with the garbage collector story.
