Part I — Investment

by Phil Manning

Any business, either starting out or looking to expand, has to make worthwhile investments to get themselves to the level they want to operate in. Many of these investments include upgrading software, redesigning or repairing any offices/storefronts, research and development of new products, and marketing. Something that should definitely be on the list is solid branding and identity, which includes having a well designed logotype that properly represents your business and reaches your customer base.

Too often, though, businesses may try and cut corners and save money when it comes to logo design. Many turn to online services like Fiverr. Fiverr offers logo design beginning at $5. You post what you’re looking for and a number of designers send proofs for you to approve.

Sounds like a real bargain, huh?

Fiverr claims that paying more for logo design is a rip off and you can get quality design work for just $5.

I disagree. In fact, I take umbrage with services like Fiverr.

The true rip off comes from deceiving business owners into thinking that any type of design work, especially logo design, requires, essentially, a negligible investment. It’s certainly an investment of time, effort, skill, and creative energy on the part of a professional designer. For Fiverr to say that charging anymore than $5 for design work is a rip off is deceitful and harmful to the livelihood of designers. It can also be harmful to businesses as well.

What Fiverr doesn’t tell you is that most of their “designers” on file are from overseas. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against foreign designers, but I am against Fiverr essentially paying poverty wages to desperate, third world workers.

Another issue comes from the fact that Fiverr does not run checks on the work that these “designers” submit. Often times the design has been lifted from someone else’s work. Not only are you not getting an original design, but you could be facing a lawsuit for copyright infringement. Plus, the files submitted to you for future use may not have the correct resolution or be designed in the correct program.

Your best bet is to go with a designer that you can get in contact with and get to know. Obviously, they are going to charge professional prices for their logo design, but you can be sure that the logo has been crafted with you and your audience in mind and the ROI will make the initial investment worth it.

So you’re ready to make the investment in a quality logo that will work for you. What exactly goes into designing a logo? I’ll cover that question in a future post.
