How powerful would it have been to put a larger monument right beside that declaring that citizens like yourself stood up to this racism in 2017 and are never going to let the state of New Orleans head down this path again? I agree that America has always been racist. In fact, what I am saying is all people have the potential to be racist if they let themselves go with the flow and do not question their own actions or beliefs. The backlash is caused by forgetting and what psychologists call the ‘fundamental attribution error.’ People have the tenancy to think they are better, smarter, more righteous than others without really looking at the effects and outcomes of their actions. Instead people wrap themselves in abstractions like equality, fairness, freedom and justice never realizing they are contorting the true meaning of these words to justify their supremacy. America is not a permanently racist country, but if we want to keep it from coming back than we need to call it out and educate people in how to learn from one another.
