I grew up just over the hill from Cheltenham (home of GCHQ) during the 80’s.

Given that GCHQ was (and probably still is) an obvious target for nukes, and that we lived far enough to be outside the blast area, but well within any area of lethal fallout, my mum used to keep enough paracetamol in the house to kill us all rather than radiation poisoning.

ie, a mother had to think about how to kill all of her children quickly so they didn’t suffer.

(Having since learnt what a paracetamol overdose does to someone, I don’t think it was the best choice)
