Achieve the perfect bantu knot out in these six simple steps

Whatever the occasion, the perfect bantu knot out will never disappoint — plus it’s super-easy to do.

Step 1: Start off by washing the hair with a sulphate-free shampoo of your choice. Then follow with a conditioner. If your hair is need of a moisture or protein boost then do a deep-conditioning treatment.

Step 2: Apply a leave-in conditioner while the hair is wet. My current favourite is the Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream, R160, available from Clicks.

Step 4: The perfect twist-out thrives on moisture and good hold. It’s vital that you apply a twist-defining cream. This is the most important step because it ensures you get defined curls.

Apply a butter like the Earthy Healthy Butter, R180, available from Earthy — it will give you a defined tight curl — or a curl defining cream like the AfroBotanics Twist, Curl and Define Cream, R64, available from Clicks.

Step 3: Do two strand twists, then twist each one on top of the hair to form a knot.

Step 4: Air-dry the hair then sleep with a satin scarf on to make sure the moisture doesn’t escape.

Step 5: One the knots are dry (don’t undo them unless they’re 100% dry), undo each knot and separate the twists.

Step 6: To get rid of the the lines and separate parts, I use a wide-toothed comb to gently lift the roots. Don’t comb the entire length of the hair — focus on the roots.
