That Which We Must Not Ignore
Our president is a friend of the vile, the despicable, the previously disavowed. He’s a friend to the scum that grows upon the sides of your sink, the silverfish that scurry along the floorboards of your kitchen when assaulted with light, the cloud of gnats hovering about your compost bin. He’s a friend to that feeling that starts as an ache in your stomach and proceeds in indescribable waves of discomfort and pain throughout your whole self after eating the tacos from that truck you were warned to avoid. He’s friendly with the sound your friend makes when he’s about to vomit which then makes you want to vomit and spreads like an empathetic aural pandemic to all those within earshot. He’s been hanging out with all those totally real Nigerian princes who’ve been falling over themselves trying to give you millions of dollars if you just first deposited a few thousand into their account (it just makes sense). He got your email address and subscribed you to all the mailing lists.

Our president wants to party with dictators and piss on Russian hookers. He wants to attack journalists and allied world leaders. He needs to be loved by racist, sexist demagogues and feeds on the insults of established politicians and decent human beings. He pumps up mobs of crazed white people pining for an authoritarian regime and riles up internet forums full of neo-nazis and Russian bots. He threatens democratic norms and the very idea of basic decorum. He fails to lead, continues to tweet, insists upon the attitude of a toddler, and refuses to be ignored. Unfortunately, we cannot ignore him.
We must bleach the scum from the sink walls, trap the silverfish and gnats, avoid bad tacos and never fake a vomit in front of friends. We must email the Nigerian princes back with an amazing deal of our own. We must, one by one, unsubscribe from all those damn mailing lists. We must resist the terrible ideas and policies of a president who began as a lame duck. We must hold the co-equal branches accountable for their responsibility in countering a man such as this. We must come out in numbers against the small showings of ridiculously adorned man-babies crowing about the loss of their supposedly superior kind. It’s called evolution, dummy, and you lost.
We must never grow tired of fighting general bigotry, homophobia, nativism, willful ignorance, sexism, racism, whataboutism, jingoism, all the other bad -isms and basic assholery. This president seems to represent all of these things and thus we must fight against everything he is. Until he is irrelevant.
