Meet The Team: Julien Campan

A proud Frenchman from the South of France that stays true to his roots; Always warm and plenty welcoming. Julien is the Head of Data and Platform at Pie Mapping and he makes sure the ship is always floating in the right direction.

This is Julien.

Hi Julien, tell us about how you came to be in your role at Pie.
I have always been passionate about data management and what you can do with it, the impact that you can have on society… I aim to have a direct, positive impact in the lives of people. Pie had this kind of objective that changes people’s lives so I naturally gravitated toward the company. I think creating a solution that trickles down into the lives of even future generations is something I’ve always cared to do, so it was an organic step from my previous company.

What sort of technology are you using to achieve this and how is it similar/different to the industry?

We love Open Source Technology so we’re always building our solution based on open source. As a platform we build microservices architecture based on Google cloud. We are Huge fans of GO and develop on it and use Go Micro to build the service application. We use Terraform, Ansible, Docker Consul, plus a cluster of different technologies to achieve an automated, scalable platform. On the basis, Open Source is the major key. MySql cloud for everything linked to our web app, Cassandra for everything linked to the tracking system.

Care to share a bit of your favourite things?

I really like three things: I like to travel around the world, to taste any food I can find, and I am a really huge fan of ping-pong and Kayaking. If I can have all these things with my family, that would be the dream. I am also a book eater; Currently I read one book a week, Mainly sci-fi and fantasy.

So not three at all, then.

Any cool spots where you recommend to kayak?

I love Gorge Du Verdon! It’s a scenic route in the South of France, in the French Riviera. Not an extreme place per se, but it is a stunning area with amazing nature.

I know you love Japan and you tend to go every year, can you share how that impacted your life in the West?

What I really like is that people seem less stressed and they take more care of each other. A sense of kinship. Also, even if it is a very modern, fast-paced country, they keep their traditions and they tend to take breaks. They slow down their days to take some self-reconstruction… And they have nice food!

Any plans you’re excited about in the future?

We are currently building a data ingestion pipeline that catches any action performed by the customer to be able to make real time stats about them. So that’s something we can look forward to on the next episode 😉

Catch Julien on LinkedIn, GitHub, and maybe even in Japan.
